David B. Matthews

Founding Principal

Dave Matthews

Dave Matthews is a lifetime New Englander, encompassing five separate stays in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont, where he has resided since 1990.

After a successful period with a regional brokerage firm, he founded NewEnglandNorth in 1993 to focus on lower mid-market transactions, with revenues $1-25 million being the general guideline

Matthews, a University of Vermont graduate, has leveraged a diverse resume of success in marketing, public relations and entrepreneurial experience into business deal making.  His prior career experiences included journalism and public relations in Vermont, athletic public relations, marketing and event management at Harvard University It was his role as executive director of New England Tennis Assn. that led him to establish his own sports marketing firm, PromoSport, in 1981.

With PromoSport, he conducted marketing and public relations seminars throughout the United States for a national sports governing organization, organized and managed a Boston world premiere film event with live appearances by Bill Cosby and Ali MacGraw. He was co-promoter of a USA/Germany Davis Cup event, featuring John McEnroe and Boris Becker, which was cited in as one of the Top 10 Sporting Events of the Century in Connecticut. He also created and promoted New England’s first sports marketing seminar, held at Boston Garden.

His eventual achievements as an intermediary blossomed in this business niche, as he successfully helped major sports events find corporate sponsorship, as well as consulting with Fortune 500 clients on their searches for the right marketing opportunities.

Matthews and his wife, Ruth, are parents of two grown daughters. They reside in Stowe, Vermont.


Scott MacArthur Phillips

Scott Philips

Scott Phillips brings over 35 years of entrepreneurial experience and skills to serve clients of the NewEnglandNorth Group, primarily in Maine, southern New Hampshire, and north of Boston.

Prior to his arrival at The NewEnglandNorth Group, he spent 13 years as an associate/partner of a regional business brokerage firm where he advised clients on valuation and marketing strategies ultimately leading to the successful transfer of ownership of a variety of privately held businesses. In addition, he assisted in the preparation of business plans, performed fee valuations for varied purposes and served as an expert witness in court testimony.

Phillips also spent 14 years in Baltimore, Maryland where he was a principal of an urban specialty retailing and development firm. He was involved with re-merchandising a mixed-use multi-cinema, restaurant, and municipal parking complex. He was an investor/developer of historic properties and served as a mayoral appointee on The Commission for Historic and Architectural Preservation. He also acted as a liaison between the Baltimore City Planning Department and the Baltimore Economic Development Corporation in promoting commercial revitalization of the inner city.

Scott graduated from Dartmouth College in 1974 with a Liberal Arts degree (History with Distinction). He is currently Chair of Rockingham Community Action, a non-profit social services agency. He enjoys golf, tennis, fly fishing and is in his 12th year of studying jazz saxophone. Scott and his wife, Nancy, have two children, and live in York, Maine.
